NightOwl App Privacy Policy
NightOwl is built to dim your Mac displays while keeping your screen contents and settings private. This policy applies only to the NightOwl Dimmer macOS application.
Effective and last updated: August 12, 2026
App privacy at a glance
- Display settings, presets, and window metadata are processed locally on your Mac.
- NightOwl does not record video, capture audio, read screen pixels, or upload screen contents.
- The App requires no NightOwl account and contains no advertising SDKs.
- Apple handles App Store purchases and optional Apple diagnostics.
1.Privacy first
NightOwl is designed to dim displays and windows without collecting your screen content. The App does not require a NightOwl account, include advertising SDKs, or sell personal information. Display controls and preferences are processed locally on your Mac.
2.Information processed by the App
NightOwl may read system-provided information needed to identify connected displays and operate the features you choose. It also processes the settings you configure.
- Connected display names or identifiers made available by macOS.
- Whether dimming is enabled and the selected level for each display.
- Quick Presets, menu bar behavior, launch-at-login choices, and keyboard shortcuts.
- NightOwl Pro purchase or entitlement status supplied through Apple StoreKit.
NightOwl does not upload display names, dimming levels, preset names, or keyboard shortcuts to the NightOwl website.
3.Window Dimming and Screen Recording Permission
NightOwl uses macOS Screen Recording permission only for the optional Pro Window Dimming feature. This access lets NightOwl read local macOS window metadata, such as visible window position, size, ordering, owning app, and window identifiers, so it can keep the active window clear while dimming inactive windows. NightOwl does not record video or audio, save screen recordings, save screenshots through this permission, read screen pixels for this feature, or transmit screen or audio content. Window metadata used for Window Dimming is processed locally on the user’s Mac and is not shared with third parties.
4.Local storage and your controls
App preferences remain in your macOS user environment so NightOwl can restore the setup you selected. You can change or reset those preferences in NightOwl. Removing the App and its local data removes those preferences, subject to macOS behavior and backups you control.
You control Screen Recording permission in System Settings under Privacy & Security. Turning it off may prevent Window Dimming and clean screenshot features from working correctly, but normal display dimming remains separate.
5.NightOwl Pro purchases
NightOwl Pro is offered as a one-time in-app purchase through Apple. Apple processes your Apple ID, payment method, billing, tax, refunds, and purchase restoration. NightOwl does not receive your full payment-card number.
The App may receive a product identifier, transaction identifier, and entitlement status needed to unlock or restore Pro features and prevent purchase fraud. Apple’s handling of this information is governed by the Apple Privacy Policy.
6.Diagnostics
If you choose to share diagnostics with Apple through macOS settings, Apple may provide the developer with crash or diagnostic reports. Reports may include technical details such as the NightOwl version, macOS version, device type, and crash state. We use this information only to diagnose reliability and compatibility problems. Apple controls this collection through your device settings and its privacy policy.
7.Third-party services
- Apple provides App Store distribution, purchases, refunds, entitlement restoration, and optional diagnostics.
- NightOwl does not send screen contents, window metadata, display preferences, or presets to advertising or analytics services.
- If you open the support form or other website links, that browser activity is covered by the separate NightOwl Website Privacy Policy.
8.Children’s privacy
NightOwl is a general-audience utility and is not directed to children under 13. The App does not require an account or ask users to provide personal information to use its display-dimming features.
9.Changes to this App Privacy Policy
We may update this policy when NightOwl features, platform requirements, or applicable laws change. The current version and effective date will remain available at this URL.
10.Questions about App privacy
Questions about NightOwl App privacy can be submitted through the NightOwl support form. The NightOwl developer is responsible for NightOwl Dimmer. Website visitors can review the separate Website Privacy Policy.
